Up The Swanny

Kathryn Quinn

Fireman were called in to rescue this highflyer after he hit a roof after trying to fly over a three-storey house in Munich, Germany.

The battered bird slid down the roof after the crash and got wedged on a grill designed to hold snow in place and prevent it from falling on people walking on the pavement below.

A person in a neighbouring house who witnessed the swans attempts to get free alerted fireman who sent to specially equipped crimes in to rescue the bird.

Fire Brigade spokesman Gunter Holler said: "It was too high to get there with a ladder – so we had to use two climbers using safety lines to go out onto the roof and rescue the bird.

"We weren't sure if he had injured himself and needed treatment so he was taken to an animal rescue centre where he was given the all clear – and then released back into the wild at a local lake."

Why the bird had crashed into the roof was unclear.
