Too Oldly No

Kathryn Quinn

One of the world's leading space scientists has been brought down to earth after officials in Trieste, Italy, refused to extend her driving licence after her 90th birthday.

Furious Margherita Hack - one of the planet's most celebrated astro-physicists - said: "I am in good health and am a danger to nobody in my little Fiat Panda. This is a breach of my constitutional rights.

"I don't regard myself as old. I have been driving since 1952 and never caused a serious accident."

But doctor Giuseppe Caragliu is refusing to budge, saying: "I have been signing certificates like this since 1977. I personally think that the age of 90 it is too old for a driving licence."

Hacked off Margherita meanwhile has refused to give up and has launched a media campaign to put pressure on officials to give her back her licence saying the ruling was "unconstitutional".
