So many weddings took place at the end of the month at Taizhou city in eastern China’s Zhejiang province that the cars with the married couples blocked the roads as they rushed to the local town hall to have their pictures taken in the nearby park.

The end of the month was popular because it was regarded as a lucky date in the local lunar calender but local traffic police had not counted on the hundreds of flower covered cars bearing bride, groom and photographer that would converge on the park.

It led to a gridlock that took hours to clear causing heated tempers and several minor accidents.

The local council has said they will not ban cars in future from heading to the area but they do plan a ban on parking, using firecrackers or covering cars with flowers that mean cars drive past too slowly.

A spokesman said: "I hope that next time it will be luckier for the newlyweds."
