A seven-year-old boy playing hide and seek with his pals thought he'd found the perfect hideaway - as he dangled by his hands from a fire escape ladder 80ft above a sheer drop onto a concrete alley.

But as the youngster - from Xiamen, Fujian province, eastern China - waited and his friends didn't find him, Ming Hen found he couldn't pull himself back up to the roof of the apartment block where he lived with his parents.

"He was hanging on for nearly an hour by which time his friends had long ago given up and gone home. We were called when someone in the street heard his screams for help," said a fire service spokesman.

Ming explained: "I was fine at first but my hands got tired and cold and I knew I couldn't hold on much longer so I had to shout out."

"I won't try that again, but I suppose I did win in the end," he added.
