Explorers have discovered a dozen ancient shipwrecks at the bottom of the Baltic sea believed to be loaded with long lost treasure.

The ships - some of them believed to be 1,000 years old - were found off the Swedish coast as energy giants mapped out a route for a pipeline to run gas from Russia to Europe.

The route was once a thriving shipping lane for trade ships running between the West and Eastern Europe.

Swedish Heritage Board spokesman Peter Norman said: "This discovery is of enormous cultural and historic value."
