Pelican brief

Michael Leidig

She might look like an ugly duckling now, but this little chick will soon grow up to be one of the most impressive birds in her zoo.

The days-old Dalmatian pelican - dubbed 'Dino' by keepers because of her featherless dinosaur looks - is set to become a star of Vienna's Schoenbrunn Zoo.

"She might look a little plain and scrawny now but she'll become an important bird. Dalmatian pelicans are endangered and that makes Dino a crucial part of our breeding programme," said one keeper.

"Her parents are very attentive so we think she'll make it," added zoo director Dagmar Schratter.
