Gorillas in the bliss

When dad is a 400lb silverback and mum could break a man's arm with a flick of her wrist, natural childbirth can be a bit risky when you're a baby gorilla.

But staff at Spain's Barcelona Zoo have just watched over what they say is the first ever birth with no human intervention, just as it would have been in the wild.

This youngster - seen here being cuddled by mum while a cousin gets a closer look - was born nine days ago (Feb 28) in a birthing nest the gorillas built themselves with the tot's proud dad looking on.

"Gorilla mothers in captivity often lose their maternal instincts but this one is feeding her own baby and we haven't intervened with bottles and human feeders," said one keeper.
