Struggling textile bosses have turned the credit crunch around a their factory in eastern China - by converting the roof into a vegetable farm.

Crops at the plant in Shaoxing, Zhejiang province, are doing so well that managers have hired three full time farmers and produce more than enough food to provide three meals a day for the 200-strong workforce.

"We are even selling the surplus so it makes sound business sense," said Wang Bin, manager at the Ailuokente Textile Co.

Veg now covers every centimetre of the 4,800 square metre of the specially strengthened roof lined with waterproof membranes.

The altitude on top of the five storey building means that the farming team doesn't have to use pesticides as bugs can't fly that high.

"After work people go up there, relax, maybe pick something fresh to eat.

"We have a happy well-fed group of workers, we're making a profit on the food and all our customers want to see it too," added Wang.
