This giant creeper growing nearly 100ft high over a university campus in Nanning, southern China, is aiming to be top of the crops.

Officials at the college in the Guangxi Zhuang region planted the thorny bougainvillea more than 10 years ago - and reckon the bloom is such a cut above other flowers, that they're applying to Guinness World Records for recognition.

Nicknamed the flower waterfall by locals, the plant's purple blooms have become a tourist attracting every spring as the giant creeper bursts into life.

One student who is one of those that is a fan of the blooming marvellous plant explained: "We all help to keep the plant healthy from the windows of our room with some leaf pruning or feeding.

"We don't mind that it blocks out the light - it's beautiful to look at when it's in flower."
