Crocodile Shock

Kathryn Quinn

Drugs police nearly bit off more than they could chew when they raided a trafficking gang's headquarters - and came face to face with a menagerie of crocodiles and deadly snakes.

The apartment in Oberhausen, Germany, was crammed with two Caiman crocs, two giant tiger pythons and more than a dozen other boa-constrictors.

Police believe the traffickers - who used the flat to store huge quantities of skunk cannabis imported from the Netherlands - used the reptiles to guard their stash and terrify other dealers.

Prosecutors say five men were arrested in the raid and are now facing 15 years in jail.

"The animals were rescued by special handlers who have now re homed them in refuges until permanent homes can be found for them," said a police spokesman.
