Yellow Rivers

Kathryn Quinn

They're the new yellow rivers that shame China.

Choked with chemical pollution that has wiped out all fish and wildlife, these two rivers around Mingzhu, Zhejiang province, eastern China, have been poisoned by the nearby Zhengxing industrial park which dumps thousands of litres of untreated waste into the Daqubang and Baiyang rivers every day.

Unlike the real life Yellow River - called the cradle of civilization in China - the colour is not caused by natural mud and sand, but by iron ore pollution which transforms the once clear waters to a rusty, chemical sewer.

Local environmentalist Zhang Haiming said: "It looks very bad but we could save these rivers if we stopped polluting them now."

"It's worse than just the rivers themselves. Local farmers use them to water their crops so the pollution gets into the food chain and starts to poison people and animals," he added.
