Plane Crazy

Kathryn Quinn

When farmer Li Jingchun decided to make his boyhood dream of owning an airliner come true, it was never going to be more than a flight of fancy.

But now - after two years of welding scrap metal, recycling discarded industrial fans, 4,000 GBP in bills, and hundreds of spray paint cans - Li says his ambition is finally taking off.

Even a quick look at the primitive passenger compartment - more in fright and than in flight - shows that the junk jet would make even Ryanair regulars think they're roughing it.

But small things like a lack of engines, an airworthiness certificate or even a pilot's licence can't keep Li's feet on the ground as he assembles the plane in the grounds of his farm in Changbai, Liaoning province, northern China.

"I've always loved planes since I was a little boy.

"It is my dream to fly a plane as a pilot with passengers in it. I'll get there somehow no matter what it takes," he explained.
