Ukrainian officials want border with Romania closed owing to swine flu

Mediafax

Authorities in the Ukrainian region of Chernivtsi have requested that several crossing points on the borders with Romania and the Republic of Moldova be closed.

The reason is the risk of the spread of the swine flu epidemic, according to news agency Omega.

"We have already petitioned the border guard service and requested the closing of crossing points on the border with the Republic of Moldova and Romania in places where medical examinations cannot be performed," Chernivitsi Oblast Governor Volodymyr Kulish said.

Moldova Border Guard Service spokesman Dumitru Osoianu said the crossing points between Moldova and Ukraine had not been closed and were functioning normally. According to Osoianu, medical examinations are performed at every location.

According to the Ukrainian News Agency, Ukrainian authorities have confirmed 60 fatalities because of swine flu and lung infections in the Oblasts of Ternopil, Ivano-Frankivsk, Chernivtsi, Lviv and Volyn.

The most deaths have occurred in Lviv Oblast, where 29 people have died.
